DO NOT CUT THE UMBILICAL CORD IMMEDIATELY AFTER BIRTH

UMBILICAL CORD:

It is a cord which makes communication between fetus and mother. It contains umbilical artery and umbilical vein. In the uterus artery carries deoxygenated blood and waste products from the fetus to placenta. Umbilical vein carries oxygenated blood and nutrients to fetus. By this way it maintains gaseous and nutritional requirements of fetus.

PLACENTA:

It is a membrane which separates fetus’s blood from the mother’s blood. It works as a barrier membrane and exchange gas, selective nutrition and waste products between fetus and mother’s blood. The placenta also contains some kind of stem cell. These stem cells are must be required for the baby’s  future life. It repairs the hypoxic destructed cells and prevents cancer formation in old age.

Q. What will happen when you cut the umbilical cord immediately after birth of a baby?

Ans: when a baby is born one-third of blood of this baby remain in placenta. When you cut the umbilical cord immediately then this one-third of fetus blood ceased in placenta and this baby will suffer from less blood volume and iron deficiency anaemia and deprived of this valuable stem cells. If this cord is not cut immediately then remaining blood can return to fetus with these stem cells. This blood save fetus from iron deficiency anaemia and cancer formation in future.

In Bangladesh mothers are suffering from iron deficiency and their babies suffer from it. So cutting umbilical cord immediately is the harmful to the baby. If the umbilical cord is kept uncut then the umbilical cord can collapse by itself due to cold exposure and muscular contraction. After few times umbilical artery will collapse and after passing remaining blood to fetus umbilical vein will collapse inter-abdominally. So it is the ideal time for cutting this cord.

Q. What will happen in respiratory distressed baby?

Ans: If a baby is born with respiratory distress you must be careful about this umbilical cord. In the baby with respiratory distress some hormone release and prevent collapse of umbilical artery and vein to maintain oxygen requirement of this baby and reduce the mortality and increase survival probability of the baby. If the umbilical cord is cut in respiratory distressed baby immediately then survival probability of this baby will reduce.

CONCLUSION:

A baby is the future of the nation. So we should be careful about their birth process. If we can save one life then we will able to save the whole nation.

  1. nice explaination-
but following question still raises that “Why is cutting of the umbilical cord as soon delivery takes place, a tradition in majority of obstetricians? they would have known about it?”
